Many miles of rivers including the Piedra River, and it's tributaries, flow through National Forests in our area. Williams Reservoir, located 5 miles north of us, offers a scenic backdrop for some great fishing. Our rivers and lakes are subject to varying flows due to rain in the summer and snowpack runoff during the spring.
The weather in our area varies greatly from season to season and day to day as a result of the mountains. We are in a semi-arid area with normally abundant snowfall (about 450 inches at Wolf Creek Pass 20 miles east of Pagosa Springs), dry early summer and fall with some monsoon rains during late July and August. Wildfires are common (and natural for a healthy forest) during the summer. Most fires in our area usually end up being small and go out on their own. The forest service closely monitors any fires to best serve the forest.
Temperatures range from negative digits to 35 degrees from late November to late March. Teens to 60's from April to early May. 30's to upper 70's in late May to mid-June. Low 40's at night to upper 80's from mid-June to mid-September. Mid-September to mid-November (when it is usually snowing) the temperatures range from the 20's to the 70's.
Snow typically starts falling on the mountains near the end of October and sticks around on the peaks until late June.
The beautiful town of Pagosa Springs is famous for the hot springs right downtown, the beautiful mountain backdrop and resting place for outdoor enthusiasts. A great day trip is a few hours in the soothing mineral hot springs. |
